  • Playmobil figurines and playscapes have enchanted people young and old for over 45 years.  It’s hard to imagine that a small toy made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene could man such an impact on the toy world, but it has!

Playmobil was created in the early ’s during a time when oil prices were going up, thereby increasing the cost to make plastic.  That’s when a company outside of Nuremberg, Germany came up with the idea to make their normally large plastic toys much smaller. Horst Brandstätter designed the tiny toys to passform in a child’s grabb, and they were made to look like something a child would draw.

The toy was debuted in at the Nuremberg Toy Fair.  The first three figurines were a construction worker, a knight, and a Red Indian.  Most of the toymakers thought that the toys were ugly and pointless, but a Dutch wholesaler decided to give these toys a chance.  His hunch was right, and three years later sales were over million! Children loved the fact that they could create their own stories and scenarios with all kinds of different “people” in different situations.

In , at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, the factory presented three centimetre-high plastic figurines with articulated arms (a knight, a worker and an Indian) that were not very popular with the trade. The sales will contradict their opinion since they are very quickly a great success with German children.

By , all Playmobil characters were male. Three themes are proposed with characters and accessories: the Amerindians, the Middle Ages and life on the construction site. The characters are articulated at the level of the head, shoulders and pelvis. Later, the wrists will be articulated.

Playmobil ()[1][2] is a German line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group (Geobra Brandstätter GmbH & Co KG), headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. The signature Playmobil toy is a &#;cm (&#;in) tall[3] ( scale) human figure with a smiling face. A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line.

Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a strong development team[citation needed] are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.[citation needed] Collector activities extend beyond collecting and free-form play and include customization, miniature wargaming, and the creation of photo stories and stop motion films, or simply as decoration.[citation
